Your mouth is the only part of your body that does not have a natural mechanism for cleansing itself. This makes it the perfect place for bacteria. As you read this, around 600 species of bacteria are lying in wait in your mouth, and many of them are clinging to the surface of your teeth. Find out about 5 plaque removers that really work.
1. Toothbrush
Your first line of defense against plaque is of course your toothbrush. To prevent plaque accumulation, you will need to brush your teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes with fluoride toothpaste and soft bristles, paying special attention to the tooth surfaces and tongue. The bristles on the toothbrush should be short and vertical but should not put too much pressure on you while you brush your teeth.
When you are done, rinse your toothbrush, shake it off, and let it dry completely. According to Howard Sesemann, the president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Orthodontics, it doesn’t matter if you use a manual or electronic toothbrush as long as you use proper tooth brushing techniques.
2. Dental Floss
Dental floss is another fantastic plaque remover. Plaque tends to hide between teeth and even the most meticulous tooth brusher cannot get rid of it all. Here is where dental floss comes into play. Experts recommend using floss at least once a day. Use around 45 centimeters of floss wrapped around your index fingers in order to clean all of your teeth and behind them.
3. Mouth Wash
There is another important step in your daily fight against plaque: antibacterial mouth rinse. After brushing and flossing, a good mouth wash will disinfect your mouth. Some mouth washes have plaque fighters, like fluoride, chlorhexidine gluconate, zinc citrate, and triclosan, but prescription recipes are much stronger. However, be aware that a lot of mouth washes have a high alcohol content, so if you have children, it is best to buy completely natural rinses. Look for products with mint oil, tea tree oil, or grapefruit seed extract.
4. A Proper Diet
Some foods are obviously bad for your health. Soda, chocolate bars, muffins, etc. Everyone knows that they will cause problems in your system. Other foods can be food for your body but are not as good for your mouth. Dark colored fruit, for example, can increase plaque and tooth stains because of their high content in sugar and acid (although natural sugar is much less harmful than refined sugar). Vegetables, however, are good for your entire body. They are low in sugar and acids, which is why they won’t cause plaque and stains, and if they are crunchy, the chewing motion will brush your teeth and produce useful saliva, which is a natural plaque defendant for your body.
5. See a Dentist Twice a Year
In order to get the best out of brushing your teeth, and using dental floss and mouth wash, see your dentist twice a year. Besides giving you a deep cleanse, your dentist will identify the problematic points and stop gingivitis, cavities, and gum diseases. If you are a person that is particularly susceptible to plaque attacks, your dentist can also apply a fine layer of sealant to the chewing surfaces of your teeth.
